The company’s payments volume increased to $4.08 trillion, up from $3.73 trillion during the period last year

Visa Inc. reported earnings that exceeded estimates as consumers both domestically and internationally turned to branded cards to transact.

Adjusted earnings per share totaled $3.48 in the company’s fiscal fourth quarter, more than the $3.44 average analyst estimate from a Bloomberg survey.

Visa’s earnings can provide a window into the health of the US consumer given how many debit and credit transactions the firm processes. That’s been especially important given geopolitical uncertainty, higher interest rates and price pressures on goods such as gas due to conflicts in the Middle East.

The company’s payments volume increased 9% to $4.08 trillion, up from $3.73 trillion during the period last year and slightly higher than the average estimate from analysts.

“Whenever technology changes commerce, we move with it, we anticipate what’s next, and we enable its growth as the leading hyperscaler of payments globally,” Chief Executive Officer Ryan McInerney said in a statement Tuesday.

In August, Visa struck a deal to acquire fraud-prevention firm BioCatch for $2.4 billion in cash, expanding its reach into security for payments.

The company also received approval from the People’s Bank of China earlier this month to begin preparations to establish a domestic bank card-clearing business in the country, following other rivals into the massive payments market.
