The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued an advisory regarding AI use in news broadcasts. It cautioned channels to strengthen editorial oversight while adhering to the Programme Code. Concerns were raised about similar broadcasts and violations relating to sensitive content coverage. Broadcasters are encouraged to undertake regular training for editorial staff to ensure compliance. Violations of the Programme Code could lead to regulatory actions under applicable laws.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has cautioned private satellite TV channels against the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) in news broadcasts and directed them to strengthen editorial oversight amid concerns over violations of the Programme Code.In an advisory, the ministry said the Inter-Departmental Committee (IDC) had observed broadcasts across multiple channels carrying similar news and visuals on similar topics, with some telecasts found to be inconsistent with the spirit of the Programme Code.
The ministry directed broadcasters to strictly comply with the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, and the Cable Television Networks Rules, 1994. It specifically flagged coverage of anti-terror operations, violent and disturbing visuals, crime and violence, natural disasters, major accidents, communal debates and the protection of sexual-offence victims’ identities.
On artificial intelligence, the ministry advised channels to exercise caution while using AI tools, including generative AI, for graphics and virtual news presentations. It said AI should be used only in an assistive capacity without compromising the accuracy, authenticity or sensitivity of news content.
Broadcasters have also been asked to strengthen editorial and content-review mechanisms and sensitise personnel involved in news gathering, editing, production, transmission and telecast to the provisions of the Programme Code. The ministry encouraged regular training programmes and workshops for editorial and production teams.
